Gym promo video ideas for January

The best gym promo video for January does not show sculpted bodies in slow motion. It takes away the fear of someone who promised themselves on New Year's Day that they would finally start, and who is now standing outside your door with no idea what happens inside. The video that works is a plain “your first visit” walkthrough, filmed in December. Below you will find a 90 second script for it, five more gym promo video ideas you can shoot on the same day, and a calendar for when to post what.
Key takeaways
- According to a survey by UK gym chain PureGym, half of people who do not go to a gym find the idea of going scary. A video that walks through the first visit step by step answers exactly that fear.
- In Slovakia, an NMS survey for MultiSport from August 2025 found that only 31 % of respondents use sports facilities and 55 % prefer to exercise alone. Your January prospect is often someone who has never been to any gym.
- The strongest format is 90 seconds from the entrance to the showers: where to park, what to say at reception, who greets you and what happens in the first session.
- Film in November or early December, when the gym is half empty and coaches have time. Publish between Christmas and 2 January.
- Gyms are tricky to film in: mirrors, flickering lights and class music you are not allowed to use on social media.
Why do January beginners never show up, even when they mean it?
Because they fear embarrassment more than effort. In PureGym's research on gym anxiety, 45 % of women said they would be nervous if other gym goers were fitter than them, and a third of people named the squat rack as the most intimidating spot in the gym. None of them worry that they will run out of breath. They worry about where to put their bag, how to start the treadmill and whether everyone will be watching.
Classic gym promo videos make this worse. Loud music, sweat and heavy plates tell your regulars “this is us”. To a beginner they say “this is not you”. That is fine for retention content, and useless for the one month of the year when new people actually walk in.
Gym promo video idea number one: the 90 second “your first visit” script
Film the beginner's route from the car park to the showers, from their point of view, with one coach guiding them the whole way. No dramatic cuts, no effects. Like this:
- Entrance, 10 seconds. Where to park, which door, which floor. It sounds trivial, yet finding the entrance at the back of a shopping centre is the first place a beginner gives up.
- Reception, 10 seconds. What to say (“it's my first time”), what you get (key fob, towel, lock) and what a single visit costs. Say the price out loud and put it in the captions.
- Changing room, 10 seconds. Lockers, showers, hair dryer. Film it empty, in the morning before opening.
- The coach introduces themselves, 15 seconds. Name, one sentence about who they train, and the line that matters: “On your first visit, ask me anything. That's literally my job.”
- The first session, 30 seconds. Warm up, a quick tour of the machines, light weights. Show a normal person, not a protein ad model.
- What to bring and what if I can't keep up, 10 seconds. Towel, water bottle, indoor shoes. And: “If you need a break, take one. Nobody here is grading you.”
- Call to action, 5 seconds. How to book a free or discounted first session. One concrete step, not five options.
Shoot the same script twice: landscape for your website and Google profile, vertical for Instagram and TikTok. We broke down what goes where in our guide to social media video formats.
Five more gym promo video ideas from the same shoot day
Once a crew is in the building, film a whole season of content. These formats help a beginner decide:
- Meet the coaches, 20 seconds each. Who they are, what they focus on, who they are a good fit for. People do not choose a gym, they choose a coach who will not make them feel stupid.
- One class, one video, 30 seconds. Pilates, spinning, circuit training. What happens, what fitness level it suits and how to sign up. That is the sweet spot for short form video.
- A normal Tuesday at 6 pm. An honest look at how busy peak time really is. If it is packed, say when it is quiet. You save a beginner one bad first visit.
- A member's story, 60 seconds. Not a before and after body transformation, but someone who started with the same fear. “For the first two weeks I only came at 7 am, when nobody was here.”
- A Google Business Profile video under 30 seconds. Space, reception, studios. Google requires profile videos to be 30 seconds or shorter and at least 720p, and this is exactly where people searching “gym near me” look first.
During the day, also grab shots without people: plates, the key fob at the turnstile, water running in the shower. This kind of B-roll keeps your feed going for months.
How to film in a gym: mirrors, flicker, music and member consent
A gym is one of the hardest interiors to film in, even if it does not look like it. Four things to plan for:
Mirrors. Whole mirrored walls mean the camera, lights and crew will end up in the shot. Your camera operator has to shoot at an angle, so agree upfront which walls are off limits.
Flicker. Fluorescent tubes and cheap LED panels on a 50 Hz grid cause banding and flicker. The fix is a shutter speed of 1/50 or 1/100 of a second. On a phone, use an app with manual controls, or at least film a test clip and check it on a big screen.
Class music. The playlist in the spin studio is licensed for public performance in your gym, not for a video on Instagram. Film without background music and add a licensed track in the edit. Our article on music licensing for video explains why this is not a formality.
Member consent. A member working out is not an extra. Film when the gym is closed to the public, or put up a notice and give anyone who does not want to appear a coloured wristband. Anyone recognisable signs a release.
If you also want a moody brand video for a campaign, this breakdown by filmmaker Jacques Crafford shows nicely how to work with light and detail in a gym:
Notice who that kind of video is for, though: people who already train. A January beginner watches it and thinks “that's not me”.
When a gym video will not bring in beginners
When the first visit does not match what the video promised. If the video says “a coach will look after you” and in January there is one coach for thirty people, you are paying to bring in people who leave disappointed and write a review. Before filming, be honest about whether you can handle the January rush: intro sessions, open days, pairing new members with one coach.
A video also cannot fix a bad offer. If step one is a twelve month contract signed at reception, no script will take the fear away. Beginners need a cheap or free first visit with no commitment. The video only gets them to the door.
And honestly, not every gym needs a crew. A small studio run by its owner can film the “first visit” video on a phone on a tripod, as long as it follows the script above and turns the music off. Professional production makes sense when you want a whole season of content from one day. You can see what that costs in our 2026 video production price guide.
Gym video calendar: when to film and when to post
Film between mid November and 10 December. The gym is half empty, coaches have time, and the regulars you invite can spare an hour for the shoot. In January you would be filming in a packed gym with coaches who have no free slots.
- By 20 December: edit, captions, approval, upload to your website and Google profile.
- 27 December to 2 January: post the “first visit” video and run paid ads on it within 5 to 10 km.
- 1 to 15 January: every other day, one video from the shoot: a coach intro or a class.
- Mid January: a member's story with the message “it's not too late to start”. Not everyone starts in week one, plenty of people wait until the holiday chaos is over.
If you want to film your whole January season in one day, have a look at how we approach video production, or simply tell us about your gym. We will come in before opening and deal with the mirrors before the camera rolls.
Gym video FAQ
Can a gym post a class video where members are recognisable?
Only with their consent. Agreeing to the gym's house rules does not cover using someone's likeness in marketing, so get a short written release from everyone recognisable on the day of the shoot.
How do I stop fluorescent lights flickering in gym footage?
Set your shutter speed to 1/50 or 1/100 of a second, a multiple of the 50 Hz mains frequency used in Europe. In countries on a 60 Hz grid, use 1/60 or 1/120 instead.
Can I use the music from a spin class in a gym promo video?
No. The licence your gym pays for playing music on the premises does not cover publishing it in a video on social media. Use a track from a music library licensed for online use.
